DeepSeek Open-Sources DeepSeek-R1 LLM with Performance Comparable To OpenAI’s O1 Model
DeepSeek open-sourced DeepSeek-R1, an LLM fine-tuned with reinforcement learning (RL) to enhance reasoning capability. DeepSeek-R1 attains outcomes on par with OpenAI’s o1 model on several benchmarks, consisting of MATH-500 and SWE-bench.
DeepSeek-R1 is based upon DeepSeek-V3, a mix of specialists (MoE) model recently open-sourced by DeepSeek. This base design is fine-tuned utilizing Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), a reasoning-oriented version of RL. The research group also performed knowledge distillation from DeepSeek-R1 to open-source Qwen and Llama designs and launched numerous versions of each; these designs exceed bigger designs, consisting of GPT-4, on mathematics and coding benchmarks.
[DeepSeek-R1 is] the primary step towards enhancing language design thinking abilities utilizing pure support knowing (RL). Our objective is to explore the potential of LLMs to develop thinking capabilities with no monitored data, concentrating on their self-evolution through a pure RL process…DeepSeek-R1 … master a vast array of jobs, including innovative writing, general concern answering, modifying, summarization, genbecle.com and more. Additionally, DeepSeek-R1 shows impressive performance on jobs requiring long-context understanding, substantially exceeding DeepSeek-V3 on long-context standards.
To develop the design, DeepSeek began with DeepSeek-V3 as a base. They initially attempted fine-tuning it only with RL, and without any supervised fine-tuning (SFT), producing a design called DeepSeek-R1-Zero, which they have likewise released. This design shows strong reasoning efficiency, but” powerful reasoning habits, it faces several issues. For example, DeepSeek-R1-Zero fights with challenges like bad readability and language blending.”
To resolve this, the group utilized a short stage of SFT to prevent the “cold start” problem of RL. They collected several thousand examples of chain-of-thought thinking to use in SFT of DeepSeek-V3 before running RL. After the RL process converged, they then collected more SFT data utilizing rejection tasting, resulting in a dataset of 800k samples. This dataset was used for additional fine-tuning and to produce the distilled designs from Llama and Qwen.
DeepSeek examined their model on a range of thinking, math, and coding criteria and compared it to other models, consisting of Claude-3.5- Sonnet, GPT-4o, and o1. DeepSeek-R1 outshined all of them on several of the standards, including AIME 2024 and MATH-500.

Within a couple of days of its release, systemcheck-wiki.de the LMArena announced that DeepSeek-R1 was ranked # 3 general in the arena and # 1 in coding and math. It was also tied for # 1 with o1 in “Hard Prompt with Style Control” category.
Django structure co-creator pipewiki.org Simon Willison discussed his try outs one of the DeepSeek distilled Llama designs on his blog site:
Each reaction begins with a … pseudo-XML tag containing the chain of idea used to assist produce the response. [Given the timely] “a joke about a pelican and a walrus who run a tea room together” … It then believed for 20 paragraphs before outputting the joke! … [T] he joke is horrible. But the process of getting there was such an interesting insight into how these brand-new models work.
Andrew Ng’s newsletter The Batch blogged about DeepSeek-R1:
DeepSeek is quickly emerging as a strong contractor of open models. Not just are these models excellent entertainers, however their license allows use of their outputs for distillation, garagesale.es possibly pressing forward the state of the art for language designs (and multimodal models) of all sizes.
The DeepSeek-R1 models are available on HuggingFace.
